What does it mean to be a community leader in 21st Century Los Angeles? How do politicians, advocates and other political actors get the attention of the city’s general public? If you wanted to run for office in Los Angles, where would you start? How are neighborhood activists shaping the future of Los Angeles? What would a more just, more livable Los Angeles even look like?
These are some of the questions that we will take up in PS 323: Civic Engagement and Leadership – Citizen Politics in 21st Century Los Angeles. The emphasis of PS 323 is on the practical side of politics. Thus the course will feature conversations with public officials, political activists and leaders from the non-profit, business and faith sectors. The course’s guest speakers will share their expertise and discuss their participation in the city’s political process. Among the course’s topics and issues will be: neighborhood democracy, political campaign management, youth incarceration and educational equity, the elimination of ‘food deserts,’ affordable housing, the engagement of business in local politics, and transnational political organizing.
