Web Marketing Internships at Ranker.com

Writing/Editorial Internship

We're a growing user-generated content site that covers everything from movies and video games, to sports and celebrities. We've got a broad audience of tens of thousands of people that come to us daily to see the latest lists about politics, pop culture, people, places, travel, food, books, movies and much, much more. Our community is growing every day, and we've already had our content featured on sites FHM and Gawker, to Sheknows.com.

We are currently looking for writers, editors, bloggers and content creators to come on board as part of our growing writing program. We need specialists in every topic under the sun, so this is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience putting all you've learning in school to use! We're also open to general writers with almost over-developed pop-culture knowledge who can create content about anything.

All of our content is in list format, so you must be comfortable working within that medium. This is not your typical online writing gig - you won't just be turning in articles to some nameless, faceless editing machine. We will be teaching you to and working with you to edit and promote your pieces, so they reach the widest possible audience on the web, and so that you learn how to better create and distribute your own content moving forward.

What's In It For You

  • Participation in our rigorous writing/marketing program/online bootcamp that will prepare you to write anywhere on the web and for anyone.
  • Visibility and promotion on our site -- the opportunity to become a featured writer, and see yourself and your work promoted on our homepage.
  • Promotion by our social media team, and tips about how to promote your own content online using Search Engine Marketing as well as Social Media Marketing.
  • Leverage everything you've learning in English, Journalism, or any Writing class toward a writing career.
  • All the college credit your school will accept (if applicable), or enough to kill an elephant.
  • The opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a growing site run by a well-known internet vet.

The Gig

  • Write about a wide variety of topics, or about your particular passion.
  • We love unique, individual content, so this is fun writing to do. Stuffy, boring writers need not apply.

Requirements

  • Must be a native English speaker with the ability to write eloquent, clear and interesting prose. No really, you need to be a good writer!
  • Must be computer savvy -- we can offer some tech support, but we're not the geek squad. Our geeks have other things to do.
  • Must have a point of view, a unique voice and the ability to find and source compelling content ideas.
  • Prior social media experience is a HUGE plus. Basic familiarity with social media is a requirement.

Social Media Marketing Internship

Want to learn how to promote something virally? Want to get in on the ground floor of an ongoing social media marketing campaign? Want

to be able to put social media optimization experience and search engine optimization training on your resume?

Ranker.com is a startup consumer website in the user-generated content space. We have an ambitious site and an equally ambitious social media management strategy, and we’re looking for entry-level interns to help us execute it.  This is a great opportunity for someone who is eager and ambitious to get their foot in the door of a growing website, make their mark on the sites social media strategy and gain valuable hands-on experience that they don’t teach in school.

It is an unpaid internship, but since we’re a startup, there’s always more work to be done than bodies to do it. So, there are always opportunities for people who prove themselves to move up to paid and/or permanent positions. The work will not always be glamorous and exciting, and you will also be asked to do some basic office/assistant tasks, but the payoff in terms of experience, educational value and resume-building will be huge. We’re not looking for someone who just needs school credit, though we will provide quite a bit of it. We’re looking for people who really are excited to learn about the web industry and about what it takes to get a website off the ground.

Requirements

  • Must be web savvy. Must know your way around mashable, digg, techcrunch, etc.
  • Must be a detail-oriented self-starter.
  • Must be able to write effectively in English. Creative writing experience is a plus but, not a must.
  • Must be willing to work from our office in Hollywood.
  • Must be able to sit in front of a computer all day. It’s a big plus if you enjoy doing so.
  • Must commit to a regular schedule of at least 10 hours/week, although 15-20 hours/week is even better. Exact days/times are flexible.
  • Must be genuinely excited about the opportunity and interested in a future in the web industry.
  • Must understand that sometimes, when you’re entry-level, you have to get lunch for the office.
  • Must also understand that getting lunch is worth it if it pays off for your future.
  • Must be able to handle a start-up environment: must be patient, flexible, able to multitask and understanding of the fact that everyone is operating on too-little sleep and too much stress.

Interested applicants should submit a resume and cover letter to Brian Gilmore at jobs@ranker.com. Please also answer the following questions: What blogs/websites do you visit regularly, why are you applying for this position, and what do you think you bring to the table for the position?
